Young Voices on Europe’s Pension Future

Have You Thought About Your Retirement?

If you haven’t, you’re not alone. Many young people haven’t given it much thought—yet retirement systems across Europe are under pressure, and it’s the younger generations who will face the consequences.

That’s why, on November 25-26, a delegation of 10 enthusiastic EYPers traveled to Brussels to take part in the European Retirement Week.

This initiative, a collaboration between EYP and Insurance Europe, aims to shine a spotlight on pensions and bring young voices into the conversations shaping the industry and policy processes. Through this partnership, Insurance Europe supported topics at two major International Sessions: Thessaloniki 2024 (the 100th Session) and The Hague 2025 (the 101st Session).

The goal? To create actionable policy recommendations developed by young people, for the industry. The European Retirement Week visit was a key moment in building bridges between the discussions held at these sessions and the industry.

What Happened in Brussels?

Our young delegation, representing nine European countries, had a packed and inspiring agenda:

  • They attended two events hosted by Insurance Europe, including the European Retirement Week launch.
  • They met with Thea Utoft Høj Jensen, Director General of Insurance Europe, diving into private pension schemes and the insurance industry’s role.
  • They connected with Pensions Europe, learning about state, occupational, and private pension systems.
  • They gained global insights into the financial system with FTI Consulting.
  • They explored financial trends and their implications for pensions with EFAMA (European Fund and Management Association), led by Bernard Delbecque.

Beyond the meetings, participants networked with key players in the industry, fostering connections that could shape their futures.

What They Said:

“My overall experience at European Retirement Week 2024 was highly enriching, both personally and professionally. It was an excellent opportunity to deepen my understanding of the complexities surrounding retirement systems in Europe, particularly the challenges of sustainability and inclusivity!”

“I truly hope that the EYP continues to organize such events and maintains close relationships with the companies that hosted us, so future participants can benefit from these incredible opportunities.”

What’s Next?

Stay tuned for the policy paper the young delegation will develop in the coming months! In the meantime, we’d love to hear your views—check out the survey on pensions created with Insurance Europe and make your voice heard.

Together, we’re shaping a more inclusive and sustainable future for retirement systems in Europe!
