Idea Competition Winners Piloting Their Projects

With continuous support and dedicated mentorship, the projects are evolving into inventive solutions that promise to lower the environmental footprint of our activities and foster deeper community connections.

Turning Climate Ideas into Action!

The Climate Youth Action Plan Idea Competition is a new initiative aimed at sparking innovative thinking and more climate-friendly practices in the EYP. This initiative wants to empower EYPers to reimagine sustainable practices at our events and within local communities.

As a network where most of our activities take place face-to-face across Europe, EYP’s environmental footprint is very significant. While we don’t want to lose the incredible benefits of these in-person gatherings, it is important that we also recognise that our travels and events are not neutral to the climate or the communities in which they are held. Here is where this Idea Competition comes into place!

Out of 16 inspiring proposals, four visionary projects have been selected in November 2024 to lead the way to a greener EYP and pilot their projects this spring:

  • Green Ambassadors Initiative – Anna Hakobyan, Greta Aghinyan & Viktorya Mamyan
This project embeds sustainability into EYP sessions by appointing dedicated Green Ambassadors. Their responsibilities include implementing eco-friendly practices, measuring the carbon footprint of events, and preparing Sustainability Reports to track positive changes.

  • Sustainable Policy Incubator – Elvira Bello Hernández
Designed to foster actionable change, this incubator aims to bring EYPers together through dynamic workshops and brainstorming sessions about how to make EYP more environmentally sustainable. Participants refine their ideas into concrete sustainability policies that can drive real impact in the network.

  • Connecting Through Sustainability – Efe Kayra Soylu
Focused on creating authentic partnerships, this project connects EYP events with local sustainability organisations and NGOs. Through collaborative field visits and workshops, participants will experience and learn from local climate action initiatives.

  • YouthOnTrack – Julius Lajtha, Leonie Tatzberger, Marvin Huber & Tuukka Rytkonen
YouthOnTrack aims to revolutionise travel for EYPers. By analysing travel patterns and exploring cost-effective, greener alternatives via train journeys, the team is building a compelling case for sustainable travel to and from sessions.

Meet the Mentors

The winning mentees are not alone in this. Guiding the projects in turning their ideas into practical solutions for the network are experienced EYP Alumni mentors who bring both expertise and passion to the table. Here’s a closer look at our mentors:

  • Edisona Franca –  Sustainable Policy Incubator
With a robust background in sustainability consulting and circular economy initiatives, Edisona has previously supported organisations in implementing sustainability strategies and designing project concepts.
  • Sander Wagemans – Green Ambassadors
Sander, who combines academic expertise with practical experience as a policy officer at the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate, is passionate about merging innovation with policy.
  • Kaisa Virolainen – YouthOnTrack
Formerly a strategic consultant, Kaisa is now interested in system transformation and resilience for sustainability and social justice. Her work at The Footprint Firm revolves around connecting diverse sectors to drive climate-positive innovations.
  • Marko Nedeljkovic – Connecting Through Sustainability
Working with the Center for Sustainable Energy Development and Platform for Energy Transition in Niš, Serbia, Marko leverages his experience in startup consultancy to empower educational programs related to sustainable energy.

Test Run at Upcoming EYP Session

Following an inspiring kick-off in Berlin, where teams further developed their ideas with EYP realities in mind, the next step is to test these projects at EYP events. Below is a summary of the upcoming pilot events, hosted by four National Committees:

  • Connecting Through Sustainability

Regional Session – Workshop with local NGOs

    Winterthur, Switzerland

  • Green Ambassadors Initiative

Outreach Event – Sustainability in practice

    Subotica, Serbia

  • EYP Sustainable Policy Incubator

Regional Session – Policy incubator session

    Madrid, Spain

  • YouthOnTrack

National Session & Regional Session – Testing sustainable travel alternatives

    Paris, France and Łódź, Poland

With continuous support and dedicated mentorship, the projects are evolving into inventive solutions that promise to lower the environmental footprint of our activities and foster deeper community connections.

As we look forward to meeting the project participants in Brussels this spring – where the projects will present their initial results – these test runs mark an essential step in our journey from idea to action. They embody our collective vision of a greener, more innovative EYP network—one where youth-driven ideas lead to tangible, lasting impact.
