Panel Discussion on the effect of digitalisation on society in Berlin, 24 November 2015

After the forum in Lyon and shortly before the International Climate Conference in Paris we will discuss the topic “Digitisation of the Energy Sector – The beginning of a ‘Brave New World‘?“ interested young people in Berlin. Lea Schiewer will moderate the event and she will be able to link the panel discussion to the discussions from the Lyon forum as she served as session president at the First Academic Power Shifts Forum in Lyon. The event will take place at 6 pm in the conference room of the Schwarzkopf Foundation Young Europe, Sophienstraße 28-29, 10178 Berlin.

Our guests on the panel are:

Dr. Martin von Broock, Wittenberg-Zentrum für Globale Ethik,
Dirk Homuth, Innovation RWE AG,
Martin Wendiggensen, participant of the International Youth Summit J7 in Berlin

The energy turnaround introduces, besides alternative and renewable energies, new participants to the market. New networks arise which foster a more active role of customers. So called “Smart Homes” allegedly increase security and efficient use of energy in living spaces and blur the boundaries between consumers and producers, relying on sharing data and information. In a digital environment, the expenses for communication between enterprises and customers are lowered, and offers can be tailored to individual needs.

Is our society ready for an extensive digital opening and integration of the energy sector? Or does this interconnectedness lead to a dystopian, fully controlled society à la Huxley’s “Brave New World”? What are the opportunities and the risks of big data technologies in the energy sector? We are looking forward to disucss these and further questions with our panel and the audience.
